What do I do now? (Just because you are working does NOT mean you cannot use your Medicare coverage. Going under YOUR OWN Medicare coverage is usually better and less expensive than what an employer can offer.) - DISCUSSION of COBRA. Just an extension of the employer’s plan. The employee is paying the premium, but the plan and benefit is the same. 2. How do I find out if I qualify for Medicare or Medical? (Medicare is age related. Medical is strictly income based. Has been income and asset-based as well. Biggest changes on asset side.) 3. What changes in CA. rules should I worry about? (CA. raised the income levels and this made it easier on the State. Challenge is there are plans that are terminating. You’ll get notices in the mail if yours is cancelled. Plans are being changed left and right. REVIEW YOUR PLANS. - DISCUSSION of the changes to MEDICARE PART D – the most utilized component of your Medicare because you take your medications EVERY DAY. - REPORT on Medicare Part D. For drugs. Most Medicare Advantage Plans have this. Medicare is going to put a cap in 2025 on the out-of-pocket maximum of $2000. for Part D. Offer individual and family coaching, personalized planning, care management and placement when the time comes. Fear cripples, but knowledge empowers. Strive to educate, inform and manage the disease and then to thrive. - QUESTIONS FROM “JOEY PALS” 1. What’s the difference in “normal aging” and the beginnings of dementia? (Making a bad decision occasionally vs. making poor judgments and decisions. Missing a monthly payment vs. problems taking care of monthly bills. Forgetting which day it is and remembering it later vs. losing track of the date or time of year, etc.) - DISCUSSION of health-related, emotional-related changes in memory. 2. My husband has beginning dementia and is quite angry and defensive. (Yes defensiveness, aggression and sudden personality changes can absolutely be symptoms of dementia as the disease damages the brain’s ability to process emotions, manage stress, and understand reality. It is often a reaction to confusion, fear, physical pain, or frustration over losing independence.) - REPORT on steps to take; 1. Rule out other conditions. 2. Remain calm and patient. 3. Reduce overstimulation. 4. Establish a routine. - REPORT that 64% of family members who care for Dementia/Alzheimer’s patients will develop CHRONIC ILLNESSES of their own and frequently DIE before the patient they are caring for. NOW there is NO CONVERSATION as opposed to other illnesses where the patient can still talk and understand. - DISCUSSION that there are over 110 forms of Dementia. - REPORT that everyone’s experience w/ Dementia IS DIFFERENT. - REPORT that there is R.E.M. sleep and NON-R.E.M. sleep. The NON-R.E.M. sleep is the IMPORTANT ONE. That’s the time when the waste and toxins are washed out of our brains. This process happens very quickly. - STATEMENT that the brain links electrical activity to the practical housekeeping of the body. - DISCUSSION of how bad proteins lead to Alzheimer’s and Dementia. - NEED TO KNOW; 1. Timelines are different. 2. Can be very aggressive. 3. Can diagnosis w/ an MRI or PET SCAN. - REPORT that it is especially IMPORTANT TO KNOW WHAT KIND OF DEMENTIA one is dealing with, and which part OF YOUR BRAIN IS DYING. – 10 TIPS FOR ALZHEIMER’S & DEMENTIA FAMILY CAREGIVERS in social situations. 1. Recognize & accept that things are now different. 2. Control your tone of voice & manage your patience levels. 3. Be careful about “crowds.” 4. Provide family members & friends an update, in advance of family dinners and gatherings. 5. Ask everyone to introduce themselves. 6. Honor their comfort zone. Maybe a table by themselves OR w/ the children. 7. Accompany your loved one into the public restroom. 8. Stick to their routine as much as possible. 9. Take advantage of available perks when traveling by air. 10. Introduce a new “tradition”. 11. When flying ask for a Wheelchair for advanced boarding and special considerations.
