There are so many kinds, 100 or more, and you need a definite diagnosis BECAUSE there are different treatments and therapies available for each one. Some treatments can hopefully SLOW the speed of the disease. Each type of dementia affects a DIFFERENT PART OF THE BRAIN and how the behaviors will present.) - SUBJECT FOR TODAY; COMMUNICATION 1. ALWAYS speak slowly AND DO NOT speak baby talk. 2. Say we’ll get through this together, you will NOT BE ALONE. 3. DO NOT EVER correct them, do NOT TRY TO BE THE HERO, that does NOT SERVE anyone. 4. There are communities (rather than facilities) here in the CV that have SUCH TRAINED STAFF, it is BETTER for everyone. The Caregiver CAN NOT ACCOMPLISH WHAT these trained professionals can do. Then the caregiver can become the CARE MANAGER. The sufferer will respond BETTER in an environment with “like” persons. You get CONTACT medical attention, therapy etc., in the right community, patients and care managers actually LIVE LONGER in this situation.) 5. DO NOT interrupt them. - REPORT that hearing loss is linked to faster atrophy in the brain, particularly in areas for processing sounds and memories. - REPORT that when hearing is impaired, the brain must work harder to process sounds and fill in gaps…i.e. diverting mental resources away from memory and higher-level thinking systems. - REPORT that 70% of family members who care for Dementia/Alzheimer’s patients will develop CHRONIC ILLNESSES of their own and frequently DIE before the patient they are caring for. NOW there is NO CONVERSATION as opposed to other illnesses where the patient can still talk and understand. - DISCUSSION that there are over 110 forms of Dementia. - REPORT that everyone’s experience w/ Dementia IS DIFFERENT. - REPORT that there is R.E.M. sleep and NON-R.E.M. sleep. The NON-R.E.M. sleep is the IMPORTANT ONE. That’s the time when the waste and toxins are washed out of our brains.
