#7 - Jan., 30 - "Mom At The Movies; The Films of Eileen Heckart, hosted by her son, Luke Yankee" @ the Historic (appropriate) Camelot Theatre. Before the screening of "Heller in Pink Tights" Luke Yankee treated the audience to touching, amusing and colorful "back stories" about his mother, Eileen Heckart. The feature movie was star-studded, with a surprisingly gentle, sexy Anthony Quinn - AND I could NOT take my eyes off a blonde Sophia Loren's tiny waste! Heckart. was of course, unforgettable. The film was colorfully shot, with wonderfully authentic Western settings (lots of mud) and costumes by Edith Head. George Cukor's attentive direction made the 1880's seemed right next door. #6 - Jan., 24 - "Art Party 2026" @ the Palm Springs Art Museum brought together - among other fabulous contributors - the legendary TCM host Dave Karger, guiding the legendary Carol Burnett, presenting to the legendary Bob Mackie!! Add the brilliant interviewing by Dave Karger to the brilliant artistry of Carol Burnett and the brilliant creative genius of Bob Mackie, and you have a BRILLIANT, LEGENDARY evening for the Palm Springs "A" list, beautifully fed by the brilliant, legendary Willie Rhine @ "849" - ALL graciously presented by Steven Brown & Richard Cain. #5 - Jan. 19 — Legendary photographer Michael Childers presents "My Husband Makes Movies" at the Palm Springs Cultural Center. The first offering was John Schlesinger’s "Billy Liar" (1963) — gloriously shot in black and white, which I love!! Brilliantly acted by Tom Courtenay with a superb supporting cast, and featuring the luminous early appearance of Julie Christie. The story is happy-sad, distinctly British, and taps into the universal human habit of imagining our lives both backward and forward. Add Michael Childers’ intimate introduction, sharing his personal stories from the making of the film with director John Schlesinger, and you have the pure joy of timeless storytelling. #4 – Jan. 17 - Revolution Stage Company, under the direction of Gary Powers, presents Assassins, with music and lyrics by the incomparable Stephen Sondheim — running through Jan. 31. Staged almost like a living history lesson, Assassins explores both the attempted and successful assassinations of American presidents and other historical figures. The production features a large, deeply talented cast and innovative technological video elements, weaving in actual historical footage that gives the show real emotional weight. For those of us who lived through many of these moments, it stirred powerful memories and feelings. For younger generations who missed the originals, this production feels especially important — a gripping, thought-provoking way to understand how history, disillusionment, and notoriety collide. www.revolutionstagecompany.com This is not easy subject matter — but essential theater.
#3 - Jan. 15 — An Evening with Melissa Manchester with the Desert Symphony marked a stunning moment at the Symphony’s new home, "The Show" at Agua Caliente Casino, Rancho Mirage. The Symphony’s opening presentation was thrilling and glorious, touching every aspect of the human spirit w/ every note. Melissa Manchester was warm, talkative, engaging, wonderfully candid, while sharing stories and insights from her remarkable career. More at www.desertsymphony.org. #2 – Jan. 14 - Adam Karsten presents "One Man, Two Guvnors" by Richard Bean at CVRep through Feb. 1, 2026. The production is fast-paced, with nonstop dialogue delivered in great English accents. Actor Peter Fanone channels Red Skelton, both in appearance and physical comedy, complete with Keystone Cops–style choreography. An outstanding cast, amazing sets, and a few delightful production surprises make this a must-see. Don’t miss it. www.cvrep.org.
1. Palm Canyon Theatre’s production of “Annie” is exactly what a Holiday show should be — warm, funny, familiar, and filled with that hopeful sparkle we all seem to need a little more of these days. It’s especially meaningful for me personally.
Fifteen years ago, my own grand-girl, Shelbey Mae, played Annie on that very stage — red dress, curls, and all (photo below). Walking into the theatre last night felt like stepping into a lovely memory.
Fast-forward to 2025, and this year’s little star, Sierra Petrilla (pictured on the right), carries the role with pure charm.
She’s got terrific comedic timing, real acting chops, and a surprisingly powerful voice for someone her age. (AND she works well w/ animals..i.e. the dog Sandy) The girl is a natural — confident, expressive, and completely at home center stage. Watch for her… she’s going somewhere far beyond Daddy Warbucks.“Annie” runs at Palm Canyon Theatre through December 21. www.palmcanyontheatre.net.
