05-08 through 05-24; “A Man of No Importance”

The Bent is producing its first musical. “A Man of No Importance” was the second collaboration for Tony Award winning playwright Terrence McNally, composer Stephen Flaherty and lyricist Lynn Ahrens, who gave us the landmark musical, “Ragtime.” Based on the 1994 Albert Finney film, “A Man of No Importance” tells the story of an amateur theatre group in Dublin and their leader, who is determined to stage a version of Oscar Wilde’s Salome at their church, despite the objections of church authorities. Jason Mannino has the leading role of bus conductor Alfie Byrne, who confronts the forces of bigotry and shame over a love “that dare not speak its name.” Jason Mannino won a Desert Star Award for his performance as Oscar Wilde the 2023 production of “Gross Indecency” at The Bent.

“A Man of No Importance” won the 2003 Outer Critics Circle Award for best musical. Directed by Steve Rosenbaum with music direction by Robert Ollis, this production also features regional favorites including Kellen Green, Sonia Reavis, Nathan Wilson, Jeffrey Scott Adair, LT Cousineau, Kelly McDaniel, Heather Joy, Rebecca McWilliams, Koby Queenan and more. It’s described as “is a beautiful and tender musical tale of love, friendship and coming to terms with who we are and who we love.”

- REPORT ON CVREP (68510 E. Palm Cyn., Dr., C. C. 92234)

Continuing through 05-10; “Ernest Shackleton Loves Me.”

This stylish, critically acclaimed new musical comedy with a tongue-in-cheek script by Tony Award-winner Joe DiPietro (“Nice Work If You Can Get It”) hits the CV Rep stage for a West Coast premiere. In this wildly inventive and romantic adventure, a sleep-deprived single mom who makes her living as a video game music composer is contacted across space and time, via a crossed connection on her cell phone, by the famous early 20th century polar explorer Ernest Shackleton while he is stranded on an iceberg in the Antarctic in the early 1900s. Inspired by her music, he shares his epic journey with her and, together, they overcome the odds in a timeless, and very funny, musical romance for the ages. This show will transport you on the journey of a lifetime. Brendan Milburn composed the music for this award-winning show with his lyricist wife Valarie Vigoda. “Ernest Shackelton Loves Me” won the 2017 Off-Broadway Alliance Award for Best New Musical and was nominated for two Lortel Awards: Outstanding Actor and Outstanding Projection Design. Craig Wells (CV Rep The Fantastiks: A Love Story Reimagined, Hand to God) will direct and Stephen Hulsey (CVRep: Guys & Dolls, Jesus Christ Superstar, Dear Evan Hansen, The Light In The Piazza, and others) will be music director.
