CITY OF PALM SPRINGS w/ Lisa Middleton, re: Mayoral elections in Palm Springs.
- REPORT that Lisa has been a ground-breaking figure in Palm Springs politics, first elected to the City Council in 2017 and becoming the first openly transgender person elected to a non-judicial office in California. Lisa went on to serve as Mayor of Palm Springs in 2021-2022, building a reputation for steady leadership, fiscal responsibility, and a strong focus on public safety and infrastructure.
- TOPIC FOR TODAY;
1. Between keeping the current rotating mayor system (where councilmembers take turns) vs. switching to a directly elected mayor chosen by voters.
- DISCUSSION that cities w/ directly elected mayors can BUILD STRONGER RELATIONSHIPS outside Palm Springs, i.e. in Sacramento and Washington D.C.
- DISCUSSION that in 7 ½ years we have had 7 mayors. Time is needed to build relationships and continuity.
- SUGGESTION that elected mayor’s term would be 4 years.
- REPORT that the City Council is studying the issue hopefully to place this issue on the ballot in Nov.
